Babies spend the majority of their time in their cot during the first year of life, so . finding the right cot is a very important task for parents. Justyna and Adam have three children and are now advising other parents on how to deal with buying this most-needed piece of furniture.

Safety is the most important thing

First of all, a cot for a newborn baby must be safe. Today’s beds are stable and strong, but rung spacing is vital. They cannot be too wide, because the baby could put his head between them and get stuck, or squeeze through and fall out. However, for a child who is already on his feet and beginning to walk, the cot must be strong and safe enough for the child to be left alone in it. Toddlers can climb, which means a dangerous fall is possible.

New or used?

Many parents decide to sell things that the child grows out of and become unnecessary. Such used cots are much cheaper, and the seller can certify that they are in good condition and completely safe, because he used them himself. The new baby cot is worth putting up for sale when the child grows out of it. You can also leave them for another child and save by avoiding the costs associated with buying a new one. Justyna and Adam decided to do it.

They chose a cradle for their first child, but when he began to sit up, they had to think about buying a cot. Then they discovered another child was coming, so they decided to buy a cot for an older toddler, and would keep the cradle for the newborn. For their third baby, they decided to keep both the cot and cradle for her. They saved a lot, because they only had to buy new bedding and recommend it to other parents.

Cradle or cot?

Justyna claims that the cradle is the perfect choice for a newborn baby. She and her husband chose a vertical cradle. Rocking is the first activity a baby experiences and stimulates its sensory integration through motor stimuli. In addition, the child feels safe and quickly falls asleep in such a cradle.

Justyna and Adam put the cradle next to their bed so they did not have to get up every time and could rock the toddler while lying in bed. The vertical cradle provides the best rolling direction: up and down. This is the baby’s natural direction, like being rocked in his parent’s arm, which is why the toddler calms down quickly and need not be held all the time.

Wooden cot, maybe white?

Solid wood beds are the most stable. Justyna and Adam decided on wood for both the cradle and cot. Their bedroom is quite dark, so white would not suit them at all. They chose a dark color and light bedding, which gave an interesting contrast. The white cot works best in a bright room, especially in the Scandinavian style. In addition, all of Justyna and Adam’s children are boys, so they both decided that a white cot would suit a girl better.

Cot equipment

Justyna and Adam have a small bedroom. Their wardrobe is bursting at the seams, so they were looking for a cot with a built-in drawer, in which they later stored clothes and diapers. As long as they had only a cradle at home, they managed to find a shelf in the closet, but it was difficult to store everything. The drawer was their salvation. They recommend it to all parents now, because not only is there a place to hide things, but also everything is at hand for when the baby is on the changing table.

Justyna and Adam bought a small changing table, which they put on the cot when it was necessary to change the baby. Choosing a mattress was a challenge for them, but they finally chose a medium-hard mattress, which was perfect. The mattress cannot be too soft or too hard. Instead of a sheet, they chose a waterproof undercoat with elastic bands that can be put on the mattress. Such a foundation will not slip and curl, and of course remains dry in the case of a leak or accident.

The whole purchase was completed with a soft pillow and a quilted blanket instead of a quilt. A quilted blanket is slightly thicker than the usual, but light and safe. It is neither cold nor too hot and Justyna and Adam believed it to be their best choice.
